very strong second set
excellent 1st set let it grow, as mentioned...
but the second set is a scorcher and the showcase: creative and has the appropriate 'spanish' elements worked into the tableau... entire second set deserves a listen straight through.
also as mentioned, 'mix is a mess' (jackstraw practically just keys, drums, vocals) but its indeed cleaned up as well as possible.

1981 far surpasses subsequent years and easily compares to 78-80.
2/27 (S>F), 3/9+10, 5/1, 5/16, 7/10, 8/12, 8/14, 9/11-9/13, 12/5, 12/26 and 12/31 represent good times.

Great Night in Barce
Wow, Garcia... channeling his heritage?
This show is on fire, I consider the Let It Grow to be the best ever.
Unfortunate that Weir is often low in the mix...

My only show
This is the only time I´ve seen The Dead play live. I would have prefered SF in the 60s, but there I was, enjoying the show in a wet night in pre-olympic Barcelona in early 80s.

In The Strangest Of Places
Kids - this is bound to get the commerical notice so grab it while you can. There is so much that's delightful about this show - in particular, the Scarlet > Fire here gets a bit of a Nawlins groove from Phile and Brent really shines on the B3. T'Choice gentle mons!
Again - all kudos to Mr. Miller. We are all blessed for your service.

Best Europe '81 Show
This is my favorite show from the 1981 fall Europe tour. Garcia is in fine form, both creative and aggressive in his playing. The set list is great with standout performances in both sets. Listen to how Jerry crafts his solos in Loser, Jed, Althea, Fire, etc. Even the post space is high energy with Other One and Sugar Mags. 5 stars for this one.

Barcelona "Loser" is one for the ages
I have loved this show for 20+ years now. The Scarlet>Fire gets the most attention with Phil's clear as a bell Fire intro being one of the best from the early 80's. The warp speed Sugar Mags is not too shabby either. But, it is the Loser that gives me mucho chills up and down my back. It possesses that lonesome, desperate yet powerful quality that only Garcia could evoke. I hope that one day shows like this one from 1981 will be widely listened to and appreciated like shows from better known periods. Two European tours, a few acoustic shows and great small to mid sized venues throughout the US makes 1981 a special year in the history of the Dead...listen in.
